In order
From the release of the scene to a clean room
Wait for the release
Don't move or clean anything until police say the scene is released. If in doubt, ask the officer.
Call
Describe which rooms and surfaces are affected. A company will usually want to see it before giving a price.
The cleanup
The area is sealed, soaked materials are removed, and the remaining surfaces are cleaned and disinfected.
Repairs
Flooring or drywall that was removed is replaced afterwards, by the cleanup company or a contractor you choose.
Who pays
Tennessee's victim program can consider cleanup
The Tennessee Department of Treasury runs the Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund for innocent victims of violent crime in Tennessee. If the crime happened in the victim's home or an eligible relative's home, the program may consider costs for cleaning and removal of materials. It does not cover repairs or replacement.
It is a fund of last resort: it does not consider costs another source covers. The Treasury's conditions include reporting the crime to authorities within 15 days (with exceptions for minors or good cause), cooperating with police and prosecutors, and filing within two years of the crime. Claims are made online.

Questions
Questions people ask
When can the cleanup start?
As soon as police release the scene. By then the medical examiner's investigator has usually finished at the scene too.
Does the cleanup company need to speak with the police?
Usually not. They need the address, access and your permission. The report number helps with insurance and the victim program.
Does an arrest have to happen before I apply to the victim program?
No. The Treasury's FAQ says the offender may never be identified or arrested, and the case does not have to be finished in court.
Can I stay in the house meanwhile?
Many people stay in other rooms while one area is sealed off. Ask the company what they suggest for your home.

Whenever you are ready
There is no wrong time to call
Some families call the same evening. Others wait until after the service. Until then, close the door to the room and leave the cleaning to people with the right protection.
Speak with a cleanup company
The call is put through to an independent company that works in your ZIP code. Ask what the job involves, how they price it and when they could begin. Nothing is agreed until you say so.
