Blood and body fluid cleanup
A fall, a deep cut, a long illness at home. Blood and other body fluids look like a cleaning job but are not one. They soak in further than they appear to and can carry disease.

Small or large
When to call and when not to
A few drops on a hard surface
Most households can handle this with gloves and a household disinfectant used as its label says.
Soaked into carpet or furniture
The fluid has probably reached the pad or the cushion core. That usually means removal, not surface cleaning.
Large areas or several rooms
Call a cleanup company. Protective equipment and proper waste handling matter here.
Why it matters
Blood is regulated at work for a reason
OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogens Standard exists because human blood can carry infectious microorganisms such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. Employers whose workers may be exposed need an exposure control plan, protective equipment, training and hepatitis B vaccinations.
A disinfectant works only if the surface stays visibly wet for the contact time on its label. EPA says to read and understand the label before using the product, and to reapply if the surface dries early.

Cost
What drives the price
Prices vary with the job. A company will look at:
- how large the affected area is and how many rooms it reaches
- what the fluid soaked into: carpet, pad, subfloor, drywall or furniture often has to be cut out
- how much time passed before anyone found it
- how many belongings have to be discarded
Questions
Questions people ask
Can I use bleach on blood?
On a small spot on a hard surface, a household disinfectant used as its label directs is reasonable. On carpet, upholstery or anything porous, surface cleaning rarely reaches what is underneath.
Is dried blood still a risk?
Treat it with the same care as fresh blood: gloves, no bare hands and proper disposal.
Do they handle businesses too?
Yes. Shops, offices and the common areas of apartment buildings are handled the same way.

Whenever you are ready
There is no wrong time to call
Some families call the same evening. Others wait until after the service. Until then, close the door to the room and leave the cleaning to people with the right protection.
Speak with a cleanup company
The call is put through to an independent company that works in your ZIP code. Ask what the job involves, how they price it and when they could begin. Nothing is agreed until you say so.
